As of July, 2018, Dana McCarty will have worked with APPLE Consulting for 10 years. At the age of 8 years old, Dana loved reading about Helen Keller and wanted to be Annie Sullivan when she grew up. Under the guidance of her advisor at CWU, she created her own major in sensory impairment, specializing in visual impairment and worked as a Rehabilitation Teacher for Washington State Department of Services for the Blind. Dana later worked in public schools as a paraprofessional and sign language interpreter in special education and general education classrooms, where she enjoyed collaborating with the teachers the other specialists in the multi-disciplinary team to learn the best strategies to help the students to learn. She returned to school to pursue a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Special Education, and has had many valuable learning experiences as a private tutor and learning from amazing BCBAs, working with children in their homes, schools, and day camps. She enjoys both discrete trial instruction, and creating fun ways to use naturalistic teaching methods. Dana is now completing the course sequence in Applied Behavior Analysis through Florida Institute of Technology to prepare to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Her goal as a BCBA is to continue to learn the best methods to help people reach their goals to be independent and happy in life, and to help their caregivers and teachers also learn the skills to partner with them to meet those goals.
